Knowledge transfer, innovation and global cooperation in vertical farming

Controlled Environment Agriculture (CEA), vertical farming and new food systems – these future-oriented topics were the focus of attention at the H4 Hotel Munich Messe on 3 and 4 September. ‘Global Food Challenges: Vertical Farming as a Catalyst for Innovation & Climate Action’ was the title of the 9th AFV Summit powered by VertiFarm. More than 30 leading international experts were invited by the Association für Vertical Farming e.V. (AVF) and Messe Dortmund to speak at the summit in the Bavarian capital. This summit was primarily about networking, knowledge exchange and knowledge acquisition – crucial factors in overcoming global challenges such as food security, the climate crisis, resource scarcity and population growth.

Dortmund, 8 September 2025 – This year's AVF Summit was characterised by professional exchanges and inspiring discussions about new concepts and partnerships. The industry presented itself as open and willing to cooperate: knowledge was actively shared – without reservation and with the clear goal of further developing vertical farming globally. A joint white paper is already in the planning stages and will serve as a central knowledge platform in the future. Christine Zimmermann-Lössl , Chair of the Association for Vertical Farming (AVF), expressed her satisfaction after the two-day summit: "Vertical Farming is rising to a new level and understanding of what is really needed, and asks the crucial question of size, customers, technology and selection of crops as well as adding new crops to the plate. Emphasizing cooperation has never been more important or widely understood within the industry and research. AVF is and will be the organization leading these developments. At the 9th AVF Summit we could feel the willingness to overcome the downward trend and got a clear signal from politics to support us."

The conference focused on topics such as the potential of vertical farming as a climate protection measure, international perspectives and success stories, trends and challenges in sustainable food production, urban agriculture, research and technology. The strong international field of participants and speakers was particularly noteworthy. Experts from the USA, Jordan, Germany, the United Arab Emirates, Sweden, Norway, Switzerland, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, Italy and other countries contributed to a diverse exchange of knowledge. Renowned speakers included Alessandro Olivieri, founder and CEO of Igrox , Besan Dahboor Engel , founder of ReVora , and Julia Rocha Romero, consultant for nature-based solutions (NbS) at the UNEP Climate Centre in Copenhagen (UNEP-CCC). Fadi Sbaiti , General Manager at Khalifa University AGX , Martin Parapatits , founder of the PhytonIq and Zelosplant Group , and Endre Harnes , Chief Commercial Officer at Avisomo , also presented their innovative findings and approaches. One of the highlights of the technical programme was the presentation by Prof. Dr Senthold Asseng . The professor shared his findings and calculations on the indoor cultivation of wheat and soy, which could make a decisive contribution to food security in the future.

This year's annual AVF Summit was supported not only by Messe Dortmund, but also by important partners and sponsors. The Bavarian State Ministry of Economic Affairs and Energy was involved as a cooperation partner. The AVF Summit received special recognition through the participation of Minister of State Hubert Aiwanger . In his speech, the farmer thanked the Association for Vertical Farming (AVF) and Messe Dortmund for promoting the topic of vertical farming.

Wissenstransfer, Innovation und globale Kooperationen im Vertical Farming

Controlled Environment Agriculture (CEA), Vertical Farming und New Food Systems – diese Zukunftsthemen waren es, die am 3. und 4. September im H4 Hotel München Messe im Fokus standen. „Global Food Challenges: Vertical Farming as a Catalyst for Innovation & Climate Action“ lautete der Titel des 9. AFV Summit powered by VertiFarm. Mehr als 30 internationale Top-Experten kamen dafür auf Einladung der Association für Vertical Farming e.V. (AVF) und der Messe Dortmund als Speaker in die bayerische Hauptstadt. Denn bei diesem Gipfeltreffen ging es vor allem um Networking, Wissensaustausch und Wissensaneignung – entscheidende Faktoren bei der Bewältigung globaler Herausforderungen wie Ernährungssicherheit, die Klimakrise, Ressourcenmangel und Bevölkerungswachstum.

Dortmund, 08.09.2025 – Der diesjährige AVF Summit war geprägt von fachlichem Austausch und inspirierenden Gesprächen über neue Konzepte und Partnerschaften. Die Branche präsentierte sich offen und kooperationsbereit: Wissen wurde aktiv geteilt – ohne Zurückhaltung und mit dem klaren Ziel, Vertical Farming global weiterzuentwickeln. Ein gemeinsames White Paper ist bereits in Planung und soll künftig als zentrale Wissensplattform dienen. Christine Zimmermann-Lössl , Vorsitzende der Association for Vertical Farming (AVF), zeigte sich nach den beiden Summit-Tagen zufrieden: „Vertikale Landwirtschaft erreicht ein neues Niveau und Verständnis dafür, was wirklich benötigt wird, und wirft die entscheidende Frage nach Größe, Kunden, Technologie und Auswahl der Pflanzen sowie nach der Aufnahme neuer Pflanzen in den Speiseplan auf. Die Betonung der Zusammenarbeit war noch nie so wichtig und wurde noch nie so umfassend in der Branche und Forschung verstanden. AVF ist und bleibt die Organisation, die diese Entwicklungen anführt. Auf dem 9. AVF-Gipfel konnten wir die Bereitschaft spüren, den Abwärtstrend zu überwinden, und erhielten ein klares Signal von der Politik, uns zu unterstützen.“

Im Fokus der Konferenz standen unter anderem Themen wie das Potenzial von Vertical Farming als Klimaschutzmaßnahme, internationale Perspektiven und Erfolgsgeschichten, Trends und Herausforderungen in der nachhaltigen Lebensmittelproduktion, urbane Landwirtschaft, Forschung und Technologie. Besonders hervorzuheben war das stark internationale Teilnehmer- und Referentenfeld. Experten aus USA, Jordanien, Deutschland, den Vereinigten Arabischen Emiraten, Schweden, Norwegen, der Schweiz, den Niederlanden, dem Vereinigten Königreich, Italien und weiteren Ländern trugen zu einem vielfältigen Wissensaustausch bei. Zu den renommierten Speakern gehörten zum Beispiel Alessandro Olivieri, Gründer und CEO von Igrox, Besan Dahboor Engel , Gründerin von ReVora und Julia Rocha Romero , Beraterin für naturbasierte Lösungen (NbS) beim UNEP-Klimazentrum in Kopenhagen (UNEP-CCC). Ein Highlight im Fachprogramm war unter anderem der Vortrag von Prof. Dr. Senthold Asseng . Der Professor teilte seine Ergebnisse und Berechnungen zum Thema Indoor-Anbau von Weizen und Soja, die entscheidend zur Ernährungssicherheit in der Zukunft beitragen können.

Top-speakers travel to Munich

It’s only one more week to go, until international experts will gather at the H4 Hotel München Messe to discuss the future of Controlled Environment Agriculture (CEA), vertical farming, and new food systems. For the ninth time, the Association for Vertical Farming e.V. (AVF) is hosting its annual summit, supported by Messe Dortmund and VertiFarm. Dortmund, 27 August 2025 – „Global Food Challenges: Vertical Farming as a Catalyst for Innovation & Climate Action” is the title of the 9th AVF Summit powered by VertiFarm, which will take place on 3 and 4 September in Munich. The Bavarian State Ministry of Food, Agriculture, Forestry, and Tourism is involved as a cooperation partner of the summit. The two-day programme of the 9th AVF Summit powered by VertiFarm is not only packed with exciting and relevant topics, but also with renowned names. The entire summit programme will be conducted in English and is available online on the website, as are the press releases with the first speaker names. In Pillar 2 (“Vertical Farming – A Catalyst for Climate Action”), Andrea Kienle from the Bavarian State Research Center for Viticulture and Horticulture (LWG) talks about Bavarian initiatives in the field of vertical farming. In the same pillar, Susanne Hirschmann and Nivedita Mahida-Königsdörfer , scientific advisors at the Bavarian Research Alliance (BayFOR) , present European funding opportunities.

Alessandro Oliveri , co-founder of Igrox SRL , is one of the speakers in Pillar 3, “Innovative Food Production and Investment.” His presentation is titled “Microalgae Production and Innovative Products.” The Italian company Igrox develops and produces LED technology for cultivation in controlled environments. Also in Pillar 3, Andreas Köck , founder of entoSOLUTIONS GmbH, will speak on “Insects as an Innovative Source for Food and Medicine”. The young company from Giessen wants to promote the industrial breeding and utilization of mealworms, soldier flies, and cockroaches.

On the second day of the summit, Pillar 4 will present initiatives for urban food systems in various cities around the world. Among others, Peter Defranceschi , Director of the ICLEI Office (Local Governments for Sustainability) in Brussels, Marcos Enriquez from Isifarmer in Madrid, Mandar Godge , CEO of GRAIN International in Singapore, and Prof. Rachel Norman from Stirling University will be traveling to the summit for this purpose. Pillar 5 covers the Startup Challenge, and Pillar 6 focuses on “Science and Technology as a Driver for Innovation”. The speaker line-up at a glance

Tusya Gabribashvili is co-founder of Space Farms , the first fully controlled vertical farm in Georgia. She previously founded Urban Greens and the Georgian Space Research Agency. The entrepreneur and innovator will present a realistic blueprint for integrating vertical farming into the heart of urban life at the summit. She will also be on the panel ‘Women in AgTech: Sharing experience and guidance’ together with Besan Dahboor Engel . She is an entrepreneur, astronaut candidate, consultant and venture builder with more than ten years of experience in promoting deep tech innovations in the fields of agricultural technology, clean energy, biotechnology, space travel and sustainable infrastructure. As founder and CEO of ReVora , Besan Dahboor Engel is responsible for the development of a carbon-negative, data-intensive food infrastructure through advanced hydroponic and closed-loop cultivation systems, turning bold visions into businesses that serve both Earth and space. Marie Ammann , Senior Innovation & Startup Manager at BayWa AG and part of AgriFoodTech Venture GmbH, completes the round. Her focus is food management and agri-food economics with a specialisation in entrepreneurship and innovation.

Julia Rocha Romero is a consultant for nature-based solutions (NbS) at the UNEP Climate Centre in Copenhagen (UNEP-CCC) . She leads initiatives that integrate nature-based approaches into urban planning to improve climate resilience and sustainable development. Her expertise includes implementing strategies to introduce nature-based solutions (NbS) in collaboration with local authorities and stakeholders. At the summit, she will highlight the central role that vertical farming plays in the context of climate action and food security.

Peter Defranceschi is Director of the ICLEI Office (Local Governments for Sustainability USA) in Brussels and heads the Global CityFood Programme. A lawyer by training, he has been advocating for resilient food and procurement systems since 2005. His focus is on urban nutrition, sustainable public procurement and the connection between urban and rural areas. Among other things, he coordinates the EU-wide SchoolFood4Change project and is committed to EU minimum standards in school catering.

Senthold Asseng works as a professor and head of the Chair of Digital Agriculture and as director of the Hans Eisenmann Forum at the Technical University of Munich . He has published over 300 publications, is a member of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) and, together with his team, received the Werner Siemens Foundation's 2023 Research Award for the Century Project Idea on indoor wheat cultivation. In his presentation, Professor Senthold Asseng will highlight the opportunities and challenges of growing wheat and soybeans in Controlled Environment Agriculture (CEA).

Fadi Sbaiti is General Manager at Khalifa University AGX in Abu Dhabi (United Arab Emirates), where he heads the research centre focusing on advances in AgTech, plant sciences and vertical indoor agriculture. His responsibilities include promoting innovative research and development in the AgTech ecosystem. He also oversees the development of important partnerships with local universities, research institutes and private companies to address agricultural challenges in desert and arid regions.

Martin Parapatits founded the PhytonIq and Zelosplant Group in 2017, which focuses on three main areas: research and development in the plant sector, the operation of an indoor wasabi farm, and consulting on all aspects of indoor farming for various target groups. At the summit, he will focus on the topic of energy efficiency in vertical farming.

Tusya Gabribashvili ist Mitgründerin von Space Farms , der ersten vollständig kontrollierten vertikalen Farm in Georgien. Zuvor gründete sie Urban Greens und die Georgian Space Research Agency. Die Unternehmerin und Innovatorin wird auf dem Summit einen realistischen Entwurf für die Integration vertikaler Landwirtschaft in das Herzstück des städtischen Lebens vorstellen. Zudem wird sie beim Panel „Women in AgTech: Sharing experience and guidance“ auf dem Podium sitzen. Und zwar zusammen mit Besan Dahboor Engel . Sie ist Unternehmerin, Astronautenanwärterin, Beraterin und Venture Builderin mit mehr als zehn Jahren Erfahrung in der Förderung von Deep-Tech-Innovationen in den Bereichen Agrartechnologie, saubere Energie, Biotechnologie, Raumfahrt und nachhaltige Infrastruktur. Als Gründerin und CEO von ReVora leitet Besan Dahboor Engel die Entwicklung einer kohlenstoffnegativen, datenintensiven Lebensmittelinfrastruktur durch fortschrittliche hydroponische und geschlossene Anbausysteme und setzt kühne Visionen in Unternehmen um, die sowohl der Erde als auch dem Weltraum dienen. Marie Ammann , Senior Innovation & Startup Manager bei der BayWa AG und Teil der AgriFoodTech Venture GmbH, macht die Runde komplett. Sie kommt aus dem Bereich Lebensmittelmanagement und Agrar- und Ernährungswirtschaft mit einer Spezialisierung auf Unternehmertum und Innovation.

Julia Rocha Romero ist Beraterin für naturbasierte Lösungen (NbS) beim UNEP-Klimazentrum in Kopenhagen ( UNEP-CCC ). Dort leitet sie Initiativen, die naturbasierte Ansätze in die Stadtplanung integrieren, um die Klimaresilienz und nachhaltige Entwicklung zu verbessern. Ihre Expertise umfasst die Umsetzung von Strategien zur Einführung naturbasierter Lösungen (NbS) in Zusammenarbeit mit lokalen Behörden und Interessengruppen. Auf dem Summit wird die Beraterin aufzeigen, welche zentrale Rolle Vertical Farming im Kontext von Klimamaßnahmen und Ernährungssicherheit spielt.

Peter Defranceschi ist Direktor des ICLEI-Büros (Local Governments for Sustainability USA) in Brüssel und leitet das Global CityFood Program. Der Jurist setzt sich seit 2005 für resiliente Lebensmittel- und Beschaffungssysteme ein. Sein Fokus liegt auf urbaner Ernährung, nachhaltiger öffentlicher Beschaffung und der Verbindung von Stadt und Land. Er koordiniert unter anderem das EU-weite Projekt SchoolFood4Change und engagiert sich für EU-Mindeststandards in der Schulverpflegung.

Senthold Asseng arbeitet als Professor und Leiter des Lehrstuhls für Digital Agriculture sowie als Direktor des Hans Eisenmann-Forums an der Technischen Universität München . Er hat über 300 Publikationen veröffentlicht, ist Mitglied der American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) und hat mit seinem Team 2023 den Forschungspreis der Werner Siemens-Stiftung zur Jahrhundertprojektidee zum Thema Indoor-Weizenanbau bekommen. Professor Senthold Asseng wird in seinem Vortrag die Chancen und Herausforderungen des Anbaus von Weizen und Sojabohnen in Controlled Environment Agriculture (CEA) beleuchten.

Fadi Sbaiti leitet als General Manager bei der Khalifa University AGX in Abu Dhabi (Vereinigte Arabische Emirate) das Forschungszentrum, welches sich auf die Fortschritte in den Bereichen AgTech, Pflanzenwissenschaften und vertikale Indoor-Landwirtschaft konzentriert. Seine Aufgaben sind dabei die Förderung innovativer Forschung und Entwicklung im AgTech-Ökosystem. Zudem steuert er den Aufbau wichtiger Partnerschaften mit lokalen Universitäten, Forschungsinstituten und privaten Unternehmen, um die landwirtschaftlichen Herausforderungen in Wüsten- und Trockengebieten zu bewältigen.

Martin Parapatits gründete 2017 die PhytonIq- und Zelosplant-Gruppe , die sich auf drei Hauptbereiche konzentriert: Forschung und Entwicklung im Pflanzenbereich, den Betrieb einer Wasabi-Indoor-Farm sowie Beratung zu allen Aspekten des Indoor-Farmings für verschiedene Zielgruppen. Knowledge transfer and networking are the focus in Munich

The concepts of Controlled Environment Agriculture (CEA), Vertical Farming and New Food Systems have become global topics of the future and dynamically developing markets. In times of climate change and increasingly frequent extreme weather phenomena, the aim of controlled environment agriculture is to find innovative solutions to global challenges such as food security, resource scarcity and population growth. “Global Food Challenges: Vertical Farming as a Catalyst for Innovation & Climate Action” is therefore the title of the 9th AFV Summit in Munich on 3 and 4 September, which the Association for Vertical Farming e.V. (AVF) is organizing together with Messe Dortmund as a kind of spin-off of the VertiFarm trade show.

Dortmund, 8 May 2025 – Since 2022, VertiFarm has provided this socially relevant topic with an exclusive platform for the essential exchange of knowledge and the presentation and discussion of innovations. This year, the focus is even more on the professional exchange between the individual players in this industry. Networking, knowledge exchange and knowledge acquisition are indispensable factors in the further development of this industry. This is because the industry is facing major challenges, which are primarily related to the lack of scalability due to high energy costs. The first steps in transforming innovative ideas into viable business models are particularly time-consuming and costly where complex technologies are used, such as in vertical farming.

The conference, which has already taken place as part of VertiFarm over the past three years, aims to establish vertical farming and its technologies as part of sustainable agriculture. From October 8 to 10, 2024, experts from business, science and research in the field of controlled environment agriculture (CEA) will be coming to Dortmund's exhibition halls for the third time in a row. At VertiFarm, the trade fair for Next Level Farming and New Food Systems, international exhibitors will present their solutions for the sustainable agriculture of the future. The trade fair will be accompanied by the top-class 8th Summit of the Association for Vertical Farming. VertiFarm also offers start-ups space to present themselves and network.

Dortmund, 08 October 2024 - Now in its third edition, VertiFarm will combine practical expertise with state-of-the-art science and research in the field of controlled environment agriculture (CEA) from 8 to 10 October 2024. The trade show will focus in particular on vertical farming with innovative solutions for tackling global challenges such as food security, resource scarcity and population growth. Interesting insights: The cannabis market is booming

One of the focus topics at VertiFarm 2024 is the use of cannabis. The legal cannabis market has seen considerable growth in recent years. Statista estimates sales for 2023 in Europe at around 745 million US dollars. Statista forecasts a further increase in the coming years. By 2027, the market volume could rise to around 2.2 billion US dollars. The high growth potential, especially for medical and cosmetic products and applications, but also in the food industry, makes cannabis a top topic at the trade fair.

Excursion to three flagship projects

On the day before the trade fair, interested trade visitors were able to get to know leading projects in the sector on a bus tour. The first stop was the Hansa aquaponics coking plant in Dortmund, where an urban farm for fish and plant cultivation is being built. Another visit was to the Dutch research institute INNEXO BV in Venlo, which has developed the first practical cannabis training together with CULTIVATORS. This was followed by a visit to the ALTMARKTgarten, a laboratory that has implemented the inFARMING® concept from Fraunhofer UMSICHT.

Ausstellerspektrum aus dem In- und Ausland

Auch 2024 ist die VertiFarm wieder international. Mit dabei sind Unternehmen aus Deutschland, den USA, China, Großbritannien, den Niederlanden, Österreich, Schweden, Norwegen und Portugal. Zu den namhaftesten Ausstellern zählen unter anderem Würth Elektronik eiSos GmbH & Co. KG und Seoul Semiconductor Europe GmbH, beides Hersteller von LED-Komponenten für ein optimales Pflanzenwachstum. Ebenso informiert Wivid AB aus Schweden zu maßgeschneiderten Beleuchtungslösungen. Zu Automatisierung in der Landwirtschaft zeigt das viel gepriesene Start-up greenhub solutions GmbH aus Leipzig seine neuesten Entwicklungen. Erstmals vertreten ist unter anderem Air Supplies aus den Niederlanden, ein Experte für Assimilationsbeleuchtung und Klimakontrollsysteme. Algatec GmbH aus Brandenburg hat innovative Solaranlagen im Gepäck. Algenwerk c/o PUEVIT GmbH aus Dresden produziert Mikroalge Spirulina als Superfood. Mit den Start-ups Direct Carbon aus Schweden, das Lösungen zur Reduktion von CO2-Emissionen entwickelt, und AgriData Innovations, das sogenannte Smart Eyes für ein datengesteuertes Gewächshausmanagement entwickelt, sind weitere innovative Geschäftsmodelle vertreten.

Interessante Insights: Der Cannabis-Markt boomt

Zu den Fokusthemen der VertiFarm 2024 gehört unter anderem die Nutzung von Cannabis. In den letzten Jahren verzeichnete der legale Cannabis-Markt ein beachtliches Wachstum. Statista schätzt den Umsatz für 2023 in Europa auf etwa 745 Millionen US-Dollar. Für die kommenden Jahre prognostiziert Statista eine weitere Steigerung. Bis 2027 könnte das Marktvolumen auf rund 2,2 Milliarden US-Dollar steigen. Das hohe Wachstumspotenzial speziell bei medizinischen und kosmetischen Produkten und Anwendungen, aber auch in der Lebensmittelindustrie macht Cannabis zu einem Top-Thema auf der Messe.

Exkursion zu drei Leuchtturmprojekten

Bereits am Vortag der Messe konnten interessierte Fachbesucher auf einer Bustour führende Projekte der Branche kennenlernen. Erster Halt war die Aquaponik Kokerei Hansa in Dortmund, auf der eine urbane Farm für die Fisch- und Pflanzenzucht entsteht. Ein weiterer Besuch stand bei dem niederländischen Auftragsforschungsinstitut INNEXO BV in Venlo an, das zusammen mit CULTIVATORS das erste praktische Cannabis-Training entwickelt hat. Im Anschluss ging es zum ALTMARKTgarten, einem Reallabor, welches das inFARMING®-Konzept des Fraunhofer UMSICHT umgesetzt hat.

Es ermöglicht die ressourcenschonende Nahrungsmittelproduktion in städtischen Gebieten, indem beispielsweise Dächer und Fassaden für den Anbau von Pflanzen genutzt werden. Ein prominentes Beispiel ist der ALTMARKTgarten in Oberhausen, wo seit 2019 landwirtschaftliche Produkte auf dem Dach eines Jobcenters angebaut werden. Das Fraunhofer-Institut für Molekularbiologie und Angewandte Ökologie IME präsentiert seine Systeme OrbiPlant® und OrbiLoop®. Sie wurden entwickelt, um das Vertical Farming effizienter und skalierbarer zu gestalten, indem flexible Förderbänder für den Pflanzenanbau verwendet werden. Diese sind leicht, benötigen kein Substrat und können Sonnenlicht nutzen, was sie für die Integration in bestehende städtische Strukturen wie Fassaden und Dächer geeignet macht.

Ebenso verfolgt das von Henry Gordon-Smith gegründete und in Brooklyn, New York, ansässige Beratungsunternehmen Agritecture das Ziel, neue landwirtschaftliche Konzepte in Städte zu bringen. Sie sollen Umwelt-, Sozial- und Wirtschaftsprobleme lösen, insbesondere im Kontext des Klimawandels. VertiFarm is once again organised by the Association for Vertical Farming e.V. (AVF) with its chairwoman Christine Zimmermann-Loessl. The energetic expert has been committed to vertical farming with vision and passion at national and international level for many years. Broad expertise with partners from business, science and research

The VertiFarm partners are once again presenting lighthouse projects for the agriculture of the future. With its inFARMING® concept, the institute has developed an innovative concept for building-integrated agriculture. The Fraunhofer Institute for Molecular Biology and Applied Ecology IME presents its OrbiPlant® and OrbiLoop® systems. They have been developed to make vertical farming more efficient and scalable by using flexible conveyor belts for plant cultivation. These are lightweight, require no substrate and can utilise sunlight, making them suitable for integration into existing urban structures such as facades and roofs.

Agritecture, a consultancy founded by Henry Gordon-Smith and based in Brooklyn, New York, also aims to bring new agricultural concepts to cities. The aim is to solve environmental, social and economic problems, particularly in the context of climate change. Agritecture's work centres on the link between architectural design and agricultural practice in order to support sustainable food production in urban areas.

The European Photonics Industry Consortium EPIC is also an important partner of VertiFarm. The organisation focuses on promoting the photonics industry in Europe. Photonics is crucial for the development of modern technologies, including those used in vertical farming, such as innovative lighting systems and sensor technologies. Other partners of VertiFarm 2024 are the German Pharmaceutical Industry Association (BPI) and the Westfälisch-Lippische Landwirtschaftsverband e.V.

Next-level farming and new food systems show to be held at Messe Dortmund in October

The third VertiFarm – one of the leading international shows for next-level farming and new food systems – is set to give start-ups, established businesses, investors and other players in the controlled environment agriculture (CEA) sector a valuable buyer-meets-seller forum with a high-content supporting programme at Messe Dortmund between 8 and 10 October. The aim is to create synergies and help visions become reality. After all, the first steps towards transforming innovative ideas into viable business models are time-consuming and costly, especially when complex technologies are involved, as is the case with vertical farming. VertiFarm gives those involved the opportunity to network for the long term, and acts as a catalyst for the industry

Dortmund, 1 October 2024 – In 2021, venture capitalists ploughed billions of US dollars into vertical farming, including large-scale funding rounds for the most promising newcomers in this still young industry. Then came COVID, the war in Ukraine, supply chain problems, high energy prices and a reassessment of risks in the face of unprofitable and consequently failed business models. Consolidation has been the name of the game ever since. Investors are increasingly focussing on a smaller number of more mature businesses whose technological solutions – such as automation, energy efficiency and AI integration – have the potential to improve the profitability of vertical farming in ways that will last.

What is a test of patience for many in the industry could be a pioneering step towards the development of a competitive industry, as we have seen in other sectors. Opportunity for start-up entrepreneurs: START-UP AREA and Young Innovators Programme

Start-up entrepreneurs looking to establish themselves on the market need capable partners by their sides. They will be able to enter into dialogue in the START-UP AREA at VertiFarm. Again this year, the open-plan area will give young businesses the opportunity to present themselves to an international audience at the show and establish valuable contacts. German-based start-ups based will have the opportunity to have their appearance at the show funded to a maximum of EUR 7,500 under the Young Innovators Programme established in collaboration with the German Federal Ministry of Economic Affairs & Climate Protection (BMWK).

The Association for Vertical Farming is also organising a start-up challenge for the first time as part of its 8 ^th summit. The panel of judges will be made up of investors, technology experts and key stakeholders in the field of vertical farming. Knowing how to make things happen: winning start-up back at VertiFarm

Leipzig-based greenhub solutions GmbH, among others, has recently shown how to exploit opportunities successfully. The start-up, founded in 2018, was at VertiFarm already last year and will be back again this time around. Start-up entrepreneurs Alexander Jaworski and Kay Plat and their team are developing automated indoor farming solutions for agriculture, with an initial marketable product ready to roll: the GreenResearcher. This compact plug-and-play system makes it possible to obtain data from standardised experiments. By analysing this data, the intention is to make plant growth and cultivation methods more efficient and productive. Promising start-ups such as direct carbon from Sweden, AgriData Innovations from the Netherlands, OnlyGreens from Ispringen in south-western Germany and omni.farm from Vienna will also be presenting at VertiFarm 2024.

Trade show presented a comprehensive overview of the market with a wide variety of products plus a high supporting programme and conference programme at Messe Dortmund

From 26 to 28 September, VertiFarm – the next-level farming and new food systems show – re-directed the spotlight onto sustainable transformation in agriculture and the production of alternative foodstuffs. The international exhibition showcased innovative concepts, technological innovations and new products and services with an eye to ensuring sustainable food supplies well into the future.

Dortmund, 02.10.2023 – VertiFarm, the international next-level farming and new food systems show, proved a great success for the second time at Messe Dortmund, with around 100 exhibitors from 17 countries showing solutions to global challenges such as crop failures, food supplements, security of supply and urban sustainability at this unique and highly informative buyer-meets-seller forum promoting controlled environment agriculture (CEA). The businesses in attendance were accompanied by a host of experts from the world of science, with bodies such as the Fraunhofer Institute for Environmental, Safety and Energy Technology UMSICHT, Darmstadt University of Technology and the Southern Westphalia University of Applied Sciences presenting new research projects at the show.

Exhibitors attest to excellent quality of participants and report signing new business transactions

“With VertiFarm, we have created a superb forum for controlled environment agriculture that highlights workable solutions to ensure security of food supplies well into the future. At the industry get-together, developers, manufacturers, distributors and other expert industry players were able to obtain crucial inspiration, exchange ideas on new approaches and identify suitable partners for implementing them. A large number of projects were initiated, launched or finalised here – all at a very high international level,” explained Sabine Loos, chief show organiser and Managing Director of Westfalenhallen Unternehmensgruppe which owns and operates the Messe Dortmund venue.

The 100 (approx.) VertiFarm exhibitors in Dortmund between 26 and 28 September included everyone from start-ups to global market leaders, with a good 46% of them travelling to the venue from outside Germany – from countries including the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Italy, the United Kingdom and elsewhere in Europe as well as North & South America and Asia.

Product Development Engineer Lutz Kaiser (ROKO Farming) was an exhibitor at the inaugural VertiFarm and judged the follow-up show to be a major success: “VertiFarm was a great show for us last year, and we left with a host of orders and great experiences. The interest and the need for vertical farming are definitely there, and the show reflects the spirit of the times. The show's focus means the quality of visitors is tremendously high. It's refreshing that everyone involved is already familiar with the subject matter, and that we can focus on quality conversations without having to explain the basics.” Wolfgang Richter from Thermal Management Sales at Weiss Klimatechnik emphasised: "VertiFarm attracts a knowledgeable, interested audience that's passionate about innovative agricultural solutions. The exhibitors and trade visitors are well acquainted with each other, which is what distinguishes the high level of this show. The show has great potential to grow further and advance the sharing of knowledge and ideas in the industry.”

High international attendance

Around 40% of this year's participants came from abroad, a large number of them from the Netherlands, France, the UK and Denmark, for example, and with many participants travelling in from Austria, Switzerland, Sweden and Spain. In fact, visitors came from a total of 40 countries around the world. According to an independent survey, around 90% of participants were “satisfied” or “very satisfied” with their visit to VertiFarm 2023.

Christine Zimmermann-Lössl, Chairwoman of the Association for Vertical Farming (AVF) and technical partner to the show, also emphasised the relevance of this industry event: “VertiFarm is extremely important, as this unique forum gives people the opportunity to share useful information and grow their vertical farming networks. The dialogue with professionals helps exhibitors grow their expertise, expand their knowledge and make important contacts in specific areas. One special highlight is our AVF Summit which specifically links these points again and makes the show an important meeting point for the industry.”

The two-day annual convention on 26 and 27 September run by the AVF, the world's leading non-profit organisation in its field, welcomed prominent scientists, industry and government representatives and investors who engaged in discussion on the key themes of Science & Research, Technology & Sustainability and Food & Cities. In addition, several promising start-ups in the fields of agriculture, renewable energy and sustainable technology were given the opportunity to present their innovative solutions to a panel of experts and potential investors.

An exciting tour of the Netherlands (the world's largest exporter of agricultural products) on the day before the show took experts to the Bosman Van Zaal company, a specialist in intelligent plant production systems, and to an algae plant to learn more about alternative proteins. The final stop was a visit to a fully automated ornamental flower production facility. The excursion was fully booked well in advance.

The date for the next VertiFarm has now been set, with the next show scheduled to be held from 8 to 10 October 2024 – at Messe Dortmund again, naturally.

September 2023 fokussierte sich die VertiFarm, Fachmesse für Next Level Farming und New Food Systems, erneut auf die nachhaltige Transformation der Landwirtschaft und die Produktion alternativer Nahrungsmittel. In einer internationalen Leistungsschau begegnete sie mit innovativen Konzepten, technologischen Neuheiten sowie neuen Produkten und Dienstleistungen der nachhaltigen Lebensmittelversorgung von morgen.

Dortmund, 29.09.2023 – Bereits zum zweiten Mal ging die VertiFarm, internationale Fachmesse für Next Level Farming und New Food Systems, erfolgreich in der Messe Dortmund an den Start. Rund 100 Aussteller aus 17 Ländern zeigten auf dem einzigartigen Informations- und Handelsplatz für Controlled Enviroment Agriculture (CEA) Lösungsansätze für globale Herausforderungen wie Ernteausfälle, Nahrungsergänzungen, Versorgungsabsicherung und urbane Nachhaltigkeit. Neben den Unternehmen waren auch zahlreiche Experten aus der Wissenschaft vertreten: So stellten im Rahmen der Messe etwa das Fraunhofer-Institut für Umwelt-, Sicherheits- und Energietechnik UMSICHT, die Technische Universität Darmstadt sowie die Fachhochschule Südwestfalen neue Forschungsprojekte vor.

Aussteller bescheinigen Top-Qualität der Teilnehmer und verzeichnen neue Geschäftsabschlüsse

„Mit der VertiFarm haben wir erfolgreich eine Plattform rund um Controlled Enviroment Agriculture geschaffen, die zielführende Lösungen für die Ernährungssicherung der Zukunft aufzeigt. So kamen vom 26. bis 28. September gut 46 Prozent der rund 100 VertiFarm-Aussteller, vom Start-up bis zum Weltmarktführer, aus dem Ausland – den Niederlanden, Norwegen, Schweden, Dänemark, Italien und Großbritannien über ganz Europa sowie aus Nord- und Südamerika und Asien.

VertiFarm mit hoher internationaler Teilnahme

Rund 40 Prozent der Teilnehmer hatten in diesem Jahr einen internationalen Hintergrund. Viele von ihnen kamen zum Beispiel aus den Niederlanden, Frankreich, Großbritannien und Dänemark. Auch aus Österreich, der Schweiz, Schweden und Spanien machten sich zahlreiche Teilnehmer auf den Weg nach Dortmund. Insgesamt reisten Interessierte aus 40 Ländern weltweit an. Rund 90 Prozent der Teilnehmer waren zufrieden bis sehr zufrieden mit dem Messebesuch auf der VertiFarm 2023, so das positive Ergebnis einer unabhängigen Befragung.

September renommierte Wissenschaftler, Branchen- und Regierungsvertreter sowie Investoren zu den Themensäulen „Wissenschaft & Forschung“, „Technology & Nachhaltigkeit“ sowie „Nahrung & Städte“. Zusätzlich erhielten einige vielversprechende Start-ups aus den Bereichen Landwirtschaft, erneuerbare Energien und nachhaltige Technologie die Gelegenheit, ihre innovativen Lösungen einer Expertenjury und potenziellen Investoren zu präsentieren.

Bei einer spannenden Besichtigungstour in den Niederlanden, dem größten Agrarexporteur der Welt, besuchten Fachkundige bereits einen Tag vor dem Messestart das Unternehmen Bosman Van Zaal zum Bereich intelligenter Pflanzenproduktionssysteme und eine Algenanlage passend zum Thema alternative Proteine. Letzter Halt war der Besuch einer voll automatisierten Zierblumenproduktion. Die Exkursion war weit im Vorlauf zur Messe bereits ausgebucht.

The pharmaceutical and cosmetics industries can also benefit from new cultivation systems and, in the medium term, meet the steadily increasing demand for medicinal plants for health care and in the beauty sector. VertiFarm offers platform for studies and research

Oberhausen-based research body the Fraunhofer Institute for Environmental, Safety and Energy Technology UMSICHT will present, among other things, an innovative agricultural system enabling regional production of high-quality food in urban environments. Show-goers will also be able to discover more about the ALMARKTgarten in Oberhausen where an in-building sustainable agricultural production facility complete with cultivation areas for fruit and vegetables was created on the roof of the Job Centre. Using the SUSKULT project as an example, the institute will also be explaining the use of sewage treatment plants as a source of nutrients, enabling the nutrients occurring in sewage treatment plants to be used for closed-cycle cultivation of horticultural products. The presentation of the LightSaverAI project, for which a working demonstrator has been developed for requirement-led control of plant lighting, will illustrate how AI can create demand-optimised illumination for production systems in indoor farms.

The Southern Westphalia University of Applied Sciences will also be presenting new research projects: The EU-funded H2020 project 'proGIreg' is investigating nature-based solutions for the regeneration of post-industrial areas and implementing these in real-life laboratories with an eye to outcomes that are practicable. Two aquaponics greenhouses have been on display since 2023 in the grounds of the Hansa coking plant in Dortmund. At the beginning of the year, the Department of Agricultural Economics at the Southern Westphalia University of Applied Sciences also launched the EU project 'INCiTiS-Food' (Horizon Europe). This brings together 23 partners conducting research into hydroponics, aquaponics and insect production in eight real-life laboratories. In the facilities in Sierra Leone, Ghana, Nigeria, Cameroon, Gabon and Kenya, young people are learning about the three new approaches and a range of different technologies. The aim is not just to enable self-sufficiency based on healthy food, but to market the harvests or the systems themselves, where possible.

Specialist excursion through the Netherlands and thence to VertiFarm

The Netherlands is considered an innovation-leader in lower water consumption and reduced carbon and methane emissions. So what better place to immerse oneself in subject matter related to vertical farming and new food systems? VertiFarm had invited visitors on an exciting tour of the Netherlands, the world's largest agricultural exporter, on the day before the show commences. Here, experts learned in real-life settings how an automated vertical farm can be set up. Stops included the Bosman Van Zaal company on the subject of intelligent plant production systems and an algae plant on the subject of alternative proteins. The final stop was a visit to a fully automated ornamental flower production facility.

Hier diskutieren vom 26. bis 27. September in der Halle 4 renommierte Wissenschaftler, Branchen- und Regierungsvertreter sowie Investoren zu verschiedenen Themensäulen:

Wissenschaft & Forschung – Hier wird beleuchtet, wie weit die Wissenschaft der vertikalen Landwirtschaft noch von der Realität entfernt ist. Außerdem wie Forschung und Industrie verbunden werden können, um die aktuellen Herausforderungen der Industrie zu verstehen und zu erkennen, was fehlt.

Technology & Nachhaltigkeit – Next Level Farming und New Food Systems setzen verstärkt auf neue Technologien. VertiFarm bietet Plattform für Studien und Forschung

Hier wurde auf dem Dach des Jobcenters eine gebäudeintegrierte, nachhaltige Agrarproduktion mit Anbauflächen für Obst und Gemüse geschaffen. Auch die Nutzung von Kläranlagen als Nährstoffquelle wird das Institut anhand des Projektes SUSKULT erläutern. So können die in Kläranlagen auftretenden Nährstoffe für den geschlossenen Anbau von gartenbaulichen Produkten eingesetzt werden. Wie KI bedarfsoptimierte Belichtungsbedingungen für Produktionssysteme in Indoor Farmen schafft, verdeutlich die Vorstellung des Projektes LightSaverAI, für das ein Funktionsdemonstrator zur bedarfsgerechten Regelung der Pflanzenbelichtung entwickelt wurde.

Auch die Fachhochschule Südwestfalen stellt neue Forschungsprojekte vor: Im EU-geförderten H2020 Projekt „proGIreg“ ( weitere Informationen ) werden naturbasierte Lösungen zu Erneuerung post-industrieller Flächen untersucht und für konkrete Ergebnisse in Reallaboren implementiert. Seit 2023 sind zwei Gewächshäuser mit Aquaponik auf dem Gelände der Kokerei Hansa in Dortmund zu besichtigen. Anfang des Jahres brachte der Fachbereich Agrarwirtschaft der Fachhochschule Südwestfalen außerdem das EU-Projekt „INCiTiS-Food“ (Horizon Europe) ( weitere Informationen ) auf den Weg. Es bündelt dreiundzwanzig Partner, die in acht Reallaboren zu Hydrokultur, Aquaponik und der Insektenproduktion Forschung betreiben. In den Einrichtungen in Sierra Leone, Ghana, Nigeria, Kamerun, Gabon und Kenia sollen junge Menschen die drei neuen Ansätze und verschiedenen Technologien kennenlernen. Damit soll nicht nur eine Selbstversorgung mit gesunden Nahrungsmitteln ermöglicht werden, bestenfalls sollen die Ernteergebnisse bzw. die Systeme auch selbst vermarktet werden.

Fachliche Exkursion in den Niederlanden und anschließend zur VertiFarm

Die Niederlande gilt als Vorreiter bei Innovationen, die sich auf einen geringeren Wasserverbrauch sowie reduzierte Kohlenstoff- und Methanemissionen konzentrieren. Welcher Ort eignet sich also besser, um in die Themen Vertical Farming und New Food Systems einzutauchen? Schon einen Tag vor Messestart hatte die VertiFarm zu einer spannende Besichtigungstour in den Niederlanden, dem größten Agrarexporteur der Welt, geladen. Fachkundige erfuhren hier praxisnah, wie man eine vertikale automatisierte Farm aufbaut. Food security for the world's population is a global mega-issue. From 26 to 28 September 2023, VertiFarm, the unique vertical farming and new food systems show now being held for the second time, will present new concepts and technological developments aimed at enabling sustainable transformation in agriculture.

Dortmund, 20 September 2023 – The consequences of global warming are increasingly making themselves felt. Heat, drought, heavy rain and storms are already having an omnipresent impact on local agriculture. In addition, the UN shows in its annual report that at least 768 million people were affected by hunger even in 2021. Following the success of the inaugural VertiFarm, Messe Dortmund will be opening its doors once again between 26 and 28 September as a meeting place for knowledgeable experts in the world of next-level farming and new food systems. This informative buyer-meets-seller platform will also offer plenty of space for inspiration, networking and business matchmaking.

Fraunhofer UMSICHT to present new agricultural systems

Oberhausen-based research body the Fraunhofer Institute for Environmental, Safety and Energy Technology UMSICHT will present, among other things, an innovative agricultural system enabling regional production of high-quality food in urban environments. Show-goers will also be able to discover more about the ALMARKTgarten in Oberhausen where an in-building sustainable agricultural production facility complete with cultivation areas for fruit and vegetables was created on the roof of the Job Centre. Using the SUSKULT project as an example, the institute will also be explaining the use of sewage treatment plants as a source of nutrients, enabling the nutrients occurring in sewage treatment plants to be used for closed-cycle cultivation of horticultural products. The presentation of the LightSaver ^AI project, for which a working demonstrator has been developed for requirement-led control of plant lighting, will illustrate how AI can create demand-optimised illumination for production systems in indoor farms.

Comprehensive line-up of providers to cover all aspects

In attendance will be businesses such as SANANBIO from China, an alliance of farmers, engineers, scientists, designers and business people supporting agribusiness worldwide with state-of-the-art indoor vertical farming and horticultural lighting technologies. Likewise, ams OSRAM will also be presenting its best-in-class technologies in the fields of sensors and lighting. SIEMENS will also be showing the latest approaches and technologies associated with crop management, environmental controls, robotics and automation. vGreens Holding, also from Germany, will be explaining various technological innovations for the production of premium fruit and crops. Vertical Future from the United Kingdom will be there with information on new production systems that are in use internationally. Numerous suppliers will also be travelling in from the Netherlands, including Priva Horticulture with innovative highlights ranging from process computers and sensors to cloud-based automation software and Hoogendoorn – a business with over 50 years' experience and a presence in 100+ countries – which will be presenting automation solutions for optimum growth climates. Plant processing and sorting machines will also be on show in Dortmund from TTA, and Bosman van Zaal will be back with its intelligent plant production systems and ventilation and water treatment systems in the food, floriculture and pharmaceutical sectors. September 2023 bildet die VertiFarm, die einzigartige Fachmesse für Vertical Farming & New Food Systems, zum zweiten Mal neue Konzepte und technologische Entwicklungen für eine nachhaltige Transformation der Landwirtschaft ab.

Dortmund, 18.09.2023 – Die Folgen der globalen Erwärmung werden immer spürbarer. Hitze, Dürre, Starkregen und Stürme zeigen bereits allgegenwärtige Auswirkungen auch auf die hiesige Landwirtschaft. Zudem weist die UNO in ihrem jährlichen Bericht aus, das mindestens rund 768 Millionen Menschen bereits 2021 von Hunger betroffen waren. Nach der erfolgreichen Premiere der VertiFarm wird die Messe Dortmund vom 26. bis 28. September erneut zum Treffpunk für Fachleute rund um die Themenwelten „Next Level Farming“ und „New Food Systems“. Der Informations- und Businesshandelsplatz bietet außerdem viel Raum für Inspiration, Austausch und das Business Matchmaking.

Fraunhofer UMSICHT präsentiert neue Agrarsysteme

Die Oberhausener Forschungseinrichtung, das Fraunhofer-Institut für Umwelt-, Sicherheits- und Energietechnik UMSICHT, stellt u.a. ein innovatives Agrarsystem vor, das eine regionale Produktion von qualitativ hochwertigen Lebensmitteln in urbanen Räumen ermöglicht. Des Weiteren können sich Messebesucher über den ALMARKTgarten in Oberhausen informieren. Hier wurde auf dem Dach des Jobcenters eine gebäudeintegrierte, nachhaltige Agrarproduktion mit Anbauflächen für Obst und Gemüse geschaffen. Auch die Nutzung von Kläranlagen als Nährstoffquelle wird das Institut anhand des Projektes SUSKULT erläutern. So können die in Kläranlagen auftretenden Nährstoffe für den geschlossenen Anbau von gartenbaulichen Produkten eingesetzt werden. Wie KI bedarfsoptimierte Belichtungsbedingungen für Produktionssysteme in Indoor Farmen schafft, verdeutlich die Vorstellung des Projektes LightSaverAI, für das ein Funktionsdemonstrator zur bedarfsgerechten Regelung der Pflanzenbelichtung entwickelt wurde.

Ganzheitliches Anbieter-Portfolio bildet alle Bereiche ab

Mit an Bord ist z.B. SANANBIO aus China, ein Zusammenschluss von Landwirten, Ingenieuren, Wissenschaftlern, Designern und Geschäftsleuten, der die Agrarwirtschaft weltweit mit modernsten Indoor-Vertical-Farming- und Gartenbau-Beleuchtungstechnologien unterstützt. Ebenso stellt ams OSRAM seine branchenführenden Technologien in den Bereichen Sensorik und Beleuchtung vor. Following last year's inaugural show, VertiFarm – the international trade show for next-level farming and new food systems – is returning to Messe Dortmund to present alternative cultivation and breeding methods as well as innovative ways to transform global food production. Auch die SIEMENS AG wird innovative Lösungen und Technologien rund um das Pflanzenmanagement, Umweltkontrollen, Robotik und die Automatisierung zeigen. Ebenso bringt SEAWATER Cubes ihre Expertise zur dezentralen Seefisch-Versorgung und der Sicherstellung einer hochwertigen Proteinernährung auf der Messe ein. Aus der Niederlande reist zudem PRIVA Horticulture BV an. Der innovative Entwickler hochmoderner Gartenbau- und Gewächshaustechnologie vertreibt seine technischen Anwendungen wie Prozesscomputer und deren Peripherie weltweit bereits in über 100 Ländern. Interessant dürfte auch das Angebot sein von MechaTronix Europe NV, führend im Segment der fortschrittlichen LED-Wachstumslampen. Die verwendeten Technologien für die Assimilationsbeleuchtung im modernen Gartenbau sorgen für höchste Erträge. Ebenfalls aus dem Bereich effiziente Lichttechnologie für Gewächshäuser und vertikale Farmen präsentiert sich etwa das erst 2020 gegründete Start-up Crocus Labs als technologischer Wegbereiter für die lokale Lebensmittelproduktion.

Auf der zukunftsweisenden Business-Plattform werden u.a. auch diese Anbieter erneut vertreten sein: Die vGreens Holding GmbH Deutschland erläutert ihre technologischen Innovationen zur Erzeugung von Premium-Früchten und Kulturpflanzen. Maschinen für die Verarbeitung und die Sortierung von Pflanzen bringt das niederländische Unternehmen TTA BV mit nach Dortmund. Als Plattform-Experte für klimatische Bedingungen wird sich Intelligent Growth Solutions (IGS) anbieten. Auch der renommierte Technikanbieter Würth Elektronik zeigt bereits zum zweiten Mal wichtige Komponenten für das Horticulture LED Lightning. Kompakte Informationen zu Engineering, Projektmanagement und der generellen Planung sowie die passende Hard- und Software für Indoor Farming Projekte erhalten Fachbesucher von ROKO Farming.

Ebenfalls wieder mit dabei ist Bosman van Zaal B.V, spezialisiert auf intelligente pflanzliche Produktionssysteme sowie Lüftungs- und Wasseraufbereitungsanlagen in den Bereichen Lebensmittel, Blumenzucht und Pharma. Das Unternehmen kann zusammen mit zwei weiteren Standorten im Rahmen einer Exkursion in die Niederlande am 25. September, einen Tag vor dem Start der VertiFarm, besucht werden.
